Programs include Berkeley residential curbside recycling, four weekly farmers’ markets, Farm Fresh Choice food justice, EcoHouse demonstration house and garden, and Climate Change Action Project. We also support a wide range of projects that align with our mission, including headwaters preservation, incinerator alternatives, indigenous permaculture program, food justice, electronic benefits transfer, and environmental literacy curriculum development. Green practices: Since 1969, we have been a forerunner in the green movement, starting one of the first curbside recycling programs in the nation. In 2009 the Berkeley Farmers’ Market became the first in the nation to institute a ban on the distribution of plastic bags and takeout ware.
